What we do here

We are a general practice. Most of what happens here is checking, cleaning and fixing teeth that have broken down. The list below says how long each thing takes and what it feels like, because those are the two questions people actually ask.

Preventive

Examination

A look at your teeth, gums and the soft tissue in your mouth, and a written note of what we find.

20 minutes
You feel
A mirror and a small probe. Nothing sharp goes into the tooth and there is no injection.
After
Nothing. You can eat straight away.
From

Restorative

White filling

Cleaning out decay and rebuilding the tooth with a material that matches its color.

Takes
30 to 50 minutes
You feel
An injection first, then pressure and vibration. The tooth is numb for two to three hours afterward.
After
Do not chew on that side until the numbness has gone. The tooth can be sensitive to cold for a week or two.

Restorative

Root canal treatment

Removing the nerve from inside a tooth that has become infected, then sealing it.

Takes
60 to 90 minutes, sometimes over two visits
You feel
An injection first. After that it is pressure and a lot of small movements. Most people find it long rather than sore.
After
The tooth is often tender to bite on for a few days. It will usually need a crown afterward to stop it splitting.

First visit

The first appointment is a look, not a treatment

Nothing is drilled, filled or taken out on the first visit unless you are in pain and ask us to. We look, we take two x-rays if you agree to them, and we write down what we find. Then we tell you what it would cost.

  1. Before you arrive

    2 minutes

    Write down any medicines you take and anything you have been told about your heart, blood pressure or bleeding. If you are nervous, say so when you book. We will give you a longer slot so nobody is rushing.

  2. At the desk

    5 minutes

    Julie will ask for your name, address and doctor. You fill in a medical history form. If you would rather do it at home, ask us to email it.

  3. Sitting down

    5 minutes

    The dentist will ask what has brought you in and when you last saw someone. There is no lecture. People come back after ten years and we start from where you are.

Are you open today?
08:30–17:00, Monday to Friday, and until 19:00 on Wednesday. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Are you taking new patients?
Yes, for private care. Our NHS list is closed and we will say so on the phone before you book anything.
Do you take my insurance?
We are recognized by the main dental plans. Bring your policy number and we will check it at the desk.
Is there parking?
Two spaces behind the building on Bellrope Lane, and free street parking on Town Green after 10:00.
Do you see children?
Yes, from the age of two. A check-up for a child is £30.
What languages do you speak?
English and Portuguese.

Getting here

Finding us

Bellrope Lane runs off Town Green, two minutes from the market cross. The door is the green one next to the framer. There is a step-free entrance at the side, and the ground floor has a surgery, a toilet and the waiting room, so nobody has to use the stairs.
